A few words about FEAM
The Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM) was founded in 1993 in Brussels with the objective of promoting cooperation between the national Academies of Medicine; and of extending to the political and administrative authorities of the European Union the advisory role that the Academies exercise in their own countries on matters concerning medicine and public health. As an umbrella organisation, it brings together national Academies of thirteen European member states (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom) and aims to reflect the European diversity by seeking the involvement of additional Academies and experts in its scientific activities and by collaborating with other European networks on scientific matters of common interest. Like its member Academies, FEAM is independent from vested interests (commercial, ideological and political) and is committed to providing evidence-based scientific advice.

Reforming the EU Clinical Trials Directive
FEAM officially launched its statement on ‘Opportunities and Challenges for Reforming the EU Clinical Trials Directive: an Academic Perspective’ on 25 January 2011 in the European Parliament in Brussels. This meeting was hosted by MEP Cristian Silviu Buşoi and organised in collaboration with the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences (www.adsm.ro). An account of the meeting will be circulated shortly.

FEAM/ANM spring conference 2011
The next spring conference of FEAM will be hosted by Accademia Nazionale di Medicina (www.accmed.org) at Sapienza University of Rome on 6 and 7 May 2011. Scientific sessions will include: Increasing collaboration between human and animal medicine; Genetic testing and personalized medicine; Harmonizing medical training in Europe.

The ARMB published its call for candidates for the new International ‘ASSIS’ Prize for the security of health information systems in Europe and invites other Academies to circulate it as widely as possible. This international prize of an amount of €5000 is awarded to a researcher from one of the European Union member states but non EU citizens can also apply if they have contributed to a work in this field financed by the EU or by public funds of one of the member states. The closing date for submission is 31 January 2012.

• In January 2011, AMS published its report ‘A new pathway for the regulation and governance of health research’: http://www.acmedsci.ac.uk/index.php?pid=47&prid=88.
• This report was prepared by a working group, chaired by Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, convened in response to an invitation from UK Government to review the regulation and governance of UK health research involving human participants, their issue or their data. The report considers the current regulatory and governance framework surrounding clinical trials, epidemiological studies and experimental medicine. There was a strong consensus that the current system is overly complex and bureaucratic, which is stifling UK health research and driving clinical studies abroad.
• In the recently published UK Budget and Growth Plan (http:///www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/2011budget_documents.htm), the top 5 actions of the ‘Healthcare and life sciences review actions’ can all be clearly linked to the Academy’s recent review on regulation and governance (pg. 98) and the UK Government explicitly acknowledged the impact of this review.

o Are also available a related press link and a short film, produced by the Wellcome Trust, featuring Sir Andrew Haines, a member of the IAMP expert advisory committee for the statement, speaking on the health co-benefits of policies to tackle climate change.
o IAMP published this statement in anticipation of the 2010 UN Climate Change Talks in Cancun, Mexico. It makes a distinct contribution to discussions around climate change by highlighting the growing evidence that certain policies to mitigate climate change can, in and of themselves, improve health. Collaboration by Academies from so many different countries is of particular importance in view of the international nature of climate change, and the shift in world power towards the eastern and southern regions of the world. This alliance shows the important contribution of national Academies to international affairs, alongside nation states, charitable foundations, companies, and non-governmental organisations.
• New Executive Director at TWAS, IAMP host Academy: Romain Murenzi, a key architect of Rwanda's efforts to devise a successful blueprint for science-based sustainable development after years of civil war and genocide, has been appointed the new executive director of TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the developing world.

OTHER PROJECTS
The 2011 call of the CEI Research Fellowship Programme (CERES) has been published. 14 fellowships (in the fields of bioinformatics, bio-nanotechnology, genomics, optical imaging and stem cells) are available for this call that will be open until 30 April 2011. CERES is promoted by the Central European Initiative (CEI) in cooperation with five partner institutions located in Trieste, Italy, - including Cluster in Biomedicine-CBM, International School for Advanced Studies-SISSA, International Center for Theoretical Physics-ICTP, International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology-ICGEB and ELETTRA Sincrotone – in the framework of an FP7-COFUND Marie Curie Action. Since its inception, CERES has funded more than 20 fellows to carry out research in one of the partner institutions. In the present call, 4 fellowships are made available by CBM to experienced researchers who are nationals of CEI member states (Albania, Austria, Bielorussia, Bosnia-Erzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine).

The recently completed CHarME project (Challenges of Harmonising Medical Education in Europe) focused on developing joint strategies for the modernisation of the medical curriculum in order to make them more transparent, more comparable, more compatible and more responsive to the needs of the 21st labour market and society in general. Based at the heart of Institut de France in Paris, it offers weekly programs and a media library with audio archives.
